Bear is recovering from serious injuries after being dragged behind truck

An East Texas man is behind bars after police found an empty dog collar attached to a cord tied onto the back of his truck. And the dog, a pitbull mix breed, was fortunately located and treated for several injuries. He is now recovering. Roger Whitmill, 47, of Lufkin was stopped by Lufkin Police this past Saturday night after a concerned citizen called in a report of a man dragging a dog behind his truck down the road. Police pulled Whitmill over for driving down the road with no headlights and failure to maintain a single lane. When the officer got closer to the vehicle he noticed a cord that was tied to the trailer. Attached to the cord was an empty dog collar. Officers found a severely injured dog nearby, underneath the railroad trestle. The dog was taken to Angelina Animal Hospital where the on-call veterinarian said the dog suffered serious bodily injury. Whitmill was arrested for cruelty to non-livestock animals: torture, driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content greater than .15, driving with no drivers license and possession of drug paraphernalia (metal marijuana grinder and a small amount of marijuana. KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather FOLLOW UP: Sunday, Feb. 16 Bear was limping around covered in bandages and wounds Monday, but still he managed to wag his tail despite being dragged behind a truck down a road Saturday night. Bear somehow managed to wiggle out of his collar, which was attached to a cord tied to the truck and Lufkin Police found him underneath a railroad trestle. "He looked a lot better than we were really expecting other than just his flesh wounds," said Dr. Lindsay Slyer, a veterinarian at the Angelina Animal Hospital. "He's a pretty happy-go-lucky guy and was a little dehydrated and sore and tender. " Lufkin Animal Control officers took Bear to the Angelina Animal Hospital, where Slyler tended to his extensive and severe flesh wounds. "In a case like this we have to kind of treat them like burn patients because of the extensiveness of the lack of skin on the arm and on the leg," Slyler said. "Mentally he's doing really good. He's extremely stable" Slyler said. "He's eating good. He's drinking good, but what we're hoping for is slowly but surely we'll be able to heal these wounds with the right medications and bandaging over a little bit of time and get him back to a normal functioning dog." Daphne Baker claimed bear was stolen from her son's yard last week. "All we know is he was chained up in my son's backyard, and someone went back there and took it off the chain," Baker said. They went looking for their dog but heard about a pitbull mix dog being dragged and decided to take a chance to see if it was theirs. "This is the first time we've seen him since he's been missing," Baker said. "I think the guy should be punished for all this, and charges will be filed on him going in the yard stealing the dog and doing what he did to the dog," Baker said. Aaron Ramsey, the director of the Kurth Memorial Animal Shelter said good teamwork played a big role in making sure Bear got the help he needed. "Lufkin Police officers did a great job in locating the animal after the incident, which allowed us to immediately come out and take the animal to receive veterinary care," Ramsey said. Lufkin Police investigators and Animal Control officers are working together to determine who Bear's owners are because two parties are claiming ownership. Bear will need up to 12 weeks to heal from his wounds. Whitmill is still being held at the Angelina County Jail. His bail has been set at $4,000.
